Peterson sparks Tigers to win in opener

MANITOWOC – Senior running back Jack Peterson rushed for 151 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Howards Grove Tigers over Manitowoc Lutheran, 22-20, in Big East Conference football action here Friday night.

The game was the season opener for both teams.

Peterson had a 1-yard TD run in the second quarter and a 52-yard scoring dash in the third. His 52-yard score, followed by Derek Stauss’s PAT gave HG a 22-14 lead.

The Lancers pulled to within 22-20 on a 32-yard pass from quarterback Aaron Hill- mer to running back Brock Staudt. Lutheran’s two-point conversion try failed on a running play.

“The kids played hard and their off-season conditioning really paid off in the end,” said Tiger head coach David Schmid.

“We did not play our best game but fought hard to pull out the victory. We have to correct our fumbling as that kept points off the board.”

The Tigers lost two fumbles.

HG’s other TD was on a 17-yard pass from quarterback Isaac Dirker to tight end Eric Reinemann in the second quarter. Sam Strege ran for the two-point conversion which put the Tigers up 8-6.

“Our running game and run defense played a major role in our win. We need to continue to build on those aspects of our game and shore up some of the areas where we were weak. I am confident we will make improvements this week and be ready to go on Friday,” said Schmid.

The Tigers will host St. Mary Catholic (Neenah) Friday at 7 p.m. in BEC play.
