Manty history museum part of ‘Museum Day Live!’

The Manitowoc County Historical Society will open its doors free of charge on Saturday Sept. 23, as part of Smithsonian magazine’s 13th annual Museum Day Live!

This is an initiative in which participating museums across the United States emulate the spirit of the Smithsonian Institution’s Washington DCbased facilities, which offer free admission every day, and open their doors for free to those who download a Museum Day Live! ticket.

Nestled in the scenic rolling Ice Age Kettle Moraine countryside of Eastern Wisconsin, the Manitowoc County Historical Society is a 60- acre outdoor interpretive museum of local history featuring over 25 historic buildings with period furnishings from Manitowoc County's early settlers. The museum’s Welcome Center features a research library as well as exhibits on stories of the community’s past.

Pinecrest Historical Village began in 1970 with a land donation from the Hugo and Eleanor Vetting family. The Village has grown to represent a reproduction of a small Wisconsin community during the early 1900s. The buildings form the commercial, social, and political core of a town and they represent several architectural styles of Wisconsin's history. The furnishings, items, and tools in the various buildings used by the Pinecrest Village interpreters are either original pieces or carefully researched reproductions.

The Museum Day Live! ticket is available for download at Smithsonian.com/museumday. Visitors who present the Museum Day Live! ticket will gain free entrance for two at participating venues on Sept. 23. One ticket per email address is permitted. For more information about Museum Day Live! 2017 and a full list of participating museums and cultural institutions, please visit Smithsonian.com/museumday.
