Panthers fall to reigning EWC champion

Kohler, the defending Eastern Wisconsin Conference girls tennis champion, defeated the Plymouth Panthers, 5-2, in dual play Aug. 17 at Kohler.

The Blue Bombers won three of the fourth singles matches to key their victory. The meet was the EWC opener for PHS which finished second in last year’s league race.

Winning for the Panthers were Ashley Batzner at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 7-6; and Hannah Stucke and Catherine Williamson at No. 3 doubles, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.

“The match [dual] was much closer than the scores would indicate. We jumped out early in most of the matches before a short rain delay halted play,” said PHS head coach Scott Milslagle.

“After returning to the courts, Kohler really stepped it up and won three of the four singles matches and two the three doubles matches.

“Ashley Batzner continued her conference winning streak by winning in straight sets and newcomers Hannah Stucke and Catherine Williamson started off their varsity career on the right note by winning their first conference match of the season in a very hard-fought three set match,” said the coach.

Batzner finished 9-0 in EWC play last season when she was named to the All-EWC first team at No. 3 singles.

HARTFORD INVITE

The Panthers opened their season at the Hartford Invitational on Aug. 12. PHS finished 1-2 in the dual tournament in which team standings weren’t kept.

The Panthers edged Greendale, 4-3; and lost to Slinger, 5-2, and Pewaukee, 6-1.

PHS swept the doubles matches versus Greendale – Kaylee Woelfel and Kayla Prahl winning at No. 1; Ellie Potrykus and Savannah Wiese, No. 2; and Stucke and Williamson, No. 3 by forfeit. Katie Benedict was a winner for PHS at No. 4 singles.

The doubles team of Potrykus and Wiese was Plymouth’s only victor against Pewaukee. The Panthers’ winners against Slinger were Batzner, and the No. 1 doubles team of Kaylee Woelfel and Kayla Prahl.
