Panthers’ Hassel second at NH Invitational

Hassel placed second and Waitkus, 17th. – Photo by Craig Hoffman, Delta Publications NEW HOLSTEIN – Junior Max Hassel of Plymouth finished second in the boys race at Thursday afternoon’s New Holstein Cross Country Invitational.

Hassel ran the 3.1-mile course in 18 minutes, 34.33 seconds. Chilton senior Dominic Steiner earned first in 18:24.35.

The PHS Panthers placed third in the boys and girls meets with 73 and 72 points, respectively. Senior Ellie Welsch paced the PHS girls with a 10th-place showing in 22:48.59 over 3.1 miles.

Winneconne won the girls title with 48. Senior Elise Large of Random Lake was the champion in 20:38.94.

The Howards Grove Tigers’ top runner in the boys competition was senior Sam Sixel who took seventh in 19:06.24. HG placed sixth in the nine-team boys meet with 143.

Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah had an incomplete boys squad and was led by Ransom Yasko who was 65th in 22:32.29.

EL-G was last in the seven team girls meet with 198 points. Mia Rentmeester led the Resorters – taking 45th in 26:01.47.

HG had an incomplete girls squad. The Tigers’ top finisher was Mattie Milz who placed 33rd in 24:52.36.

“We had a nice opening meet for both teams. Our focus in this meet is to give all our kids an opportunity to race and to establish a starting point for each runner,” said PHS head coach Jay Grosshuesch.

“All our runners finished the race real well and we are proud of their effort in the first meet,” said Grosshuesch.

“The Tiger runners performed well. It was great being able to compete at a high level in such an early stage of our season,” said Tiger head coach Gary Kalk.

“Seniors Sam Sixel and Mattie Milz have provided great leadership and are off to great starts to their seasons.”

The invitational was the sea MAX son debuts for HG and EL-G.
