Tigers third in South Invite bracket

SHEBOYGAN – The Howards Grove Tigers had a strong defensive performance as they placed third in their bracket at Saturday’s Sheboygan South Boys Soccer Invitational at the Horace Mann Soccer Complex.

HG finished 1-1-1 in the tournament which included two eight-team brackets. Kohler won the Tigers’ bracket. The two bracket winners didn’t play each other to determine an overall tourney champion.

“Our defense was really tough all day, with only giving up two goals [excluding penalty kicks in a shoot-out] in three games,” said Tiger head coach Bob Peterson.

“Austin Bender in the goal make some really great saves and the four defenders in front of him [Jack Baldwin, Mitchell McDaniel, Ryan Baldwin and Aaron Korpi] cut off many runs by the opposing teams all day.”

The Tigers won their firstround match in a shoot-out on penalty kicks, 3-2, over Wrightstown. Scoring one penalty kick each for HG were Bender, Blake Pedrin and William Rautmann. The match was tied 0-0 through regulation play.

The shoot-out victory counts as a tie on HG’s season record which is 1-2-1. HG led 8-1 in shots on goal. Bender made one save.

The win advanced the Tigers to the semifinals versus Port Washington. The Pirates scored two second-half goals to prevail, 2-0.

The Pirates had a 6-2 edge in shots on goal. Bender was credited with four saves.

HG bounced back from the loss with a 2-0 victory over Sheboygan South to earn third. Rautmann, a junior forward, scored both goals in the opening half, with the first one assisted by Peter Grimm.

The Tigers led 6-4 in shots on goal. Bender made two saves.

“Overall, I thought we played really well [in the tourney]. We possessed the ball much better all day, kept good spacing and made the right reads based on what the defense presented,” said Peterson.
