Tigers pull out win in BEC opener

HOWARDS GROVE – The Howards Grove Tigers outlasted St. Mary Catholic (Neenah) in five games to win their Big East Conference girls volleyball opener here Tuesday night.

HG lost game one, 16-25, and won three of the next four, 25-14, 25-22, 20-25, 15-12 to earn the hard-fought victory.

The Tigers won the Division 3 state title, the BEC tournament and a league division title last season but lost several key seniors to graduation.

“Last night was a great way to start off the conference season. I told the athletes in the fifth set we are very to fortunate to have this opportunity to learn and develop as a very young team. You can’t simulate that kind of pressure in practice for a young group,” said Tiger head coach Brett Damrow.

“In the fifth set we had three freshman and two sophomores on the court. I thought they really trusted their training and showed calmness when we needed it. Overall, it was a big team win.”

Sophomore Emily Bruckschen led HG in kills with 15. Makenzie Schlafke and Leah Parnitzke had a team-high 15 assists each. Mackenzie Holzwart led in digs with 29.
