‘Simply Show Up’ for music at UW-Sheboygan

The University of Wisconsin- Sheboygan has a strong musical presence in the community with three performing ensembles - the University Chorus, the Vocal Jazz Ensemble and the Jazz Ensemble.

With rehearsals beginning next week, UW-Sheboygan’s Music Professor, Christy Talbott encourages anyone interested in joining one of these groups (without college credit) to “simply show up.” The classes “provide a wonderful opportunity to work towards a high standard of musical performance in a nonthreatening and friendly environment,” according to Talbott.

Anyone who wants college credit must enroll, however all others may simply visit one of the three ensemble’s first practice sessions next week (Sept. 11-14). All groups meet in rehearsal room 7006, located in the Fine Arts Building on the UW campus, located at One University Drive in Sheboygan.

UW-Sheboygan presents one concert each semester that includes all three performing ensembles. Off-campus and special events provide additional opportunities for community outreach.

The blended community/ University Chorus (MUS072) has weekly meetings on Mondays from 5-6:40 p.m. Mike Schulz will join the choir as guest conductor this semester. Schulz received his B.M. in Music Education from St. Norbert College and his M.M. degree in Choral Conducting and Music History from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

Tricia Marton is choral accompanist.

The Vocal Jazz Ensemble (MUS075) is designed for those with significant singing experience and meets on Wednesdays from 3:30–5:10 p.m. Paul Sucherman directs the ensemble. Sucherman’s background includes studies at Northwestern and DePaul Universities and extensive performances throughout the United States, Europe and Mexico.

The Jazz Ensemble (MUS074) meets Thursdays from 4–5:15 p.m. and is also led by master jazz keyboardist, Paul Sucherman. Both a student and audience favorite, the ensemble provides an opportunity for members to maintain their skills, play some great jazz music, and learn new performance skills.

To receive college credit, participants must apply to become a student and then enroll online. To apply, visit http://sheboygan.uwc.edu/admissions/application.
