Tigers play well at Xavier Invitational

APPLETON – The Howards Grove Tigers gave a good showing in the Appleton Xavier Invitational boys soccer tournament, held Friday and Saturday.

The Tigers finished 1-1-1 in the tourney and didn’t place but head coach Bob Peterson was very pleased with the team’s play.

“Overall, we played really well all weekend. Our defense played outstanding and I thought Jack and Ryan Baldwin played their [defensive] position very good,” said Peterson whose team is 7-3-3 this season.

“Mitchell McDaniel had a very nice weekend at the defensive sweeper spot and Austin Bender [goalie] made some incredible saves again for us.”

In their tourney opener, the Tigers tied Fox Valley Lutheran [Appleton], 1-1. Rozz Yost scored HG’s goal. The Tigers led 10-8 in shots on goal. Bender made seven saves.

The Tigers edged Eau Claire North, 1-0, in their second match. William Rautmann tallied the Tigers’ goal, assisted by Peter Grimm. North led 11-6 in shots on goal. Bender was credited with 11 saves.

In their third match, the Tigers lost to Appleton Xavier, 4-2. Rautmann scored a goal in the first half, assisted by Grimm. HG trailed 3-1 at halftime.

Lane Reinke had HG’s goal in the second half. Xavier had an 11-8 edge in shots on goal. Bender made seven saves.
