Falls captures Raider Invite

SHEBOYGAN – The Sheboygan Falls Falcons girls soccer team went 2-0-1 to win the Sheboygan North Raider Shootout Invitational Saturday, May 8.

Falls edged Sheboygan South 2-1, tied Hartford 1-1 and won the shootout 4-3 to advance to the championship. In the finals, the Falcons shutout Appleton Xavier 1-0.

The Falcons improved to 11-2-1 overall.

Falcons senior Hannah Meyer scored the only goal in the first half over Appleton and that was enough for the win.

Senior Ashley Entringer and sophomore Cassie Hammen scored field goals in the opening win over South. Assists were dished by Meyer and Kelly Jens of the Falls squad.

Junior Lilly Rotter allowed only two goals in three games and was in goal for Falls in the 4-3 shootout win over Hartford. Allie Giese scored the goal, with an assist from Hammen.

Mentink was very happy with the defensive play of Andrea Rusch, Jensen Hamilton, Marie Kettler, Brianna Nack and Rotter. He felt Rotter was especially tough in the shootout.

The Falcons lost a close battle with the New Holstein Huskies 2-1 Thursday, May 6.

Falls dominated on offense for two-thirds of the game, but the Huskies were able to get a goal from Mariah Wipperman, with 15 minutes left in the second half to take the victory.

“We had a lot of fight to come here and get a win like this,” said Huskies coach Nate Laabs. “Our team never gave up.”

The Falcons outshot New Holstein 16-7, but failed to get a shot in the final minutes, as the Huskies kept kicking the ball deep.

Falls now is 6-1 and New Holstein is 5-0-2. Both teams are tied for first in the Eastern Wisconsin Conference.

“They were more aggressive in the second half,” Mentink remarked. “Somehow we lost our momentum and didn’t play our game in the second half.”

Falls was without one starter and had two players injured, forcing Mentink to play with a small bench.

Junior Erika Krueger gave the Falcons a 1-0 lead at the 15-minute mark, with an assist from sophomore Kelly Jens.

New Holstein tied the game 1-1 on a questionable penalty shot by Meghan Pasineau with five minutes left in the first half.

Two players kicked at the ball at the same time, but Falls was called for kicking a player.
