Steines, Bergman power Tigers to lopsided win

CEDAR GROVE – Brenna Steines and Steph Bergman homered to pave the way for the Howards Grove Tigers’ 18-4 shellacking of Cedar Grove-Belgium here Tuesday afternoon.

Bergman belted a two-run homer in the top of the first, followed by Steines’ solo shot. Steines, a sophomore catcher, led the Tigers in RBIs with four. Bergman and winning pitcher Brittani Rooker had three each.

The Tigers improved to 6-4 in the Central Lakeshore Conference softball race (6-7 overall).

Howards broke the contest open with a six-run second on three hits, three walks and a Rocket error.

Bergman, a junior third baseman, was 3-for-4, including a triple, to lead Howards’ 11-hit attack. Steines and Emily Schuh contributed two hits each. Jazmin Stauss and Tracy Wehrmann collected two hits apiece.

Rooker threw a five-hitter and walked six. Steph Ruppel was the losing hurler and allowed nine walks. Jess Burant paced the Rockets in hits with two.
