PHS duo falls in sectional first round

APPPLETON – Plymouth’s senior duo of Kayla Prahl and Kaylee Woelfel lost in the first round of Division 1 girls sectional tennis doubles play here Thursday.

The loss eliminated the Panther team from further competition in the No. 1 flight. Twin sisters Hannah and Amanda Dorsey of Neenah, the No. 1-ranked doubles team in the state, defeated Prahl and Woelfel 6-1, 6-0. The Panthers finished 14-13 for the season.

The Dorseys, 25-0 this season, went on to capture first and earn a state berth. Neenah won the 16-team sectional meet with 54 points (includes subsectional and sectional meets). PHS placed eighth with 10.

“They [Prahl and Woelfel] didn’t play poorly but were just overmatched from the start,” said Panther head coach Scott Milslagle.

“They both felt they played fairly well but felt they left some points out on the court, and a bounce here or a bounce there would have made it much closer than the final score.

“It was an unfortunate draw for them as watching the other teams at the sectionals I felt that they would have competed very well against any of the other teams. They had already beaten one of the teams and I feel that they would have advanced to the state tournament with a different draw,” said Milslagle.

“I put them in for a special [state] qualifier but they lost out to an Appleton North team who had a better overall record.

“They had a great senior season and great career, and the two of them will be missed terribly by the Panther program,” said the coach.
