Shirley M. Van Ess, age 84, of Waldo, passed away on Monday evening, October 30, 2017, at St. Nicholas Hospital in Sheboygan. She was born on January 24, 1933, daughter of the late Frank and Wilhelmina (Kuse) Henning.

Shirley attended Sheboygan area grade schools and graduated from Sheboygan Central High School in 1951. She later attended Mission House College, which is now Lakeland University.

On December 4, 1954, she married Jerome Van Ess in Sheboygan, WI. The couple resided on the family homestead in Waldo following their marriage. Jerome preceded her in death on January 14, 2011. Shirley worked at Dr. Wanezak’s office as an orthodontist assistant for several years.

She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Waldo. Shirley actively enjoyed operating the family farm, taking her daily crop tours, time at the pond, sewing, photography, playing piano, roller skating, cooking, and computer time. She also enjoyed spending time with her family and many companions for breakfast at Waldo Café. She always had a jigsaw puzzle on her kitchen table.

Survivors include: Five Daughters: Jennifer (Charles) Born of Sheboygan Falls, Lori (Gary) Larson of Westby, Mary Ann (William) DeGroff of Plymouth, Amy Van Ess (Special Friend: Jay Wimmler) of Waldo, and Sue (Bruce) Behr of Plymouth; Ten Grandchildren: Jessica (Brad) Meulemans of Westby, Tim Larson of Chippewa Falls, Craig Larson (Fiance: Brook Sullivan) of La- Crosse, Anna DeGroff (Special Friend: Jake Voigt) of Waldo, Sara DeGroff of Plymouth, Erica (Reuben) Rex of Random Lake, Kyle Bohn of Waldo, Paul Hammes of Waldo, Julia Behr (Friend: Johnny Wulff) of Plymouth and Laura Behr of Plymouth; 3½ Great grandchildren: Kendyl, Jerrod, Levi, and one due in February; Brothers and Sisters-in-law: Pat Runstrom of Ladysmith, Dr. Harold Diers (Mary) of Tucson, AZ, Jack Wisman of Plymouth and Florine Henning of Miller, SD. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Shirley was preceded in death by: Her step-mother: Viola Henning; Grandson: Travis Born; Mother and Father-in-law: Maurice and Edith Van Ess; Brothers and Sisters-in-law: Don and Betty Schutt, Betty Wisman, Doris and Kenneth Wagner, Dr. Milton Henning, and Dr. John Runstrom.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday (November 4, 2017) at 1:30 P.M. at the Suchon Funeral Home in Plymouth. Rev. Denise Kwiatkowski, Pastor of Trinity United Methodist Church of Waldo will officiate. Cremation will take place following the services.

Visitation will take place at the Suchon Funeral Home on Saturday (Nov. 4) from 10:30 A.M. until the time of services.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established in Shirley’s name.
