County earns award for excellence in financial reporting

The Government Finance Offers Association of the United State and Canada (GFOA) has awarded a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting to Sheboygan County for its comprehensive annual financial report for the fiscal year ending Dec. 31, 2016.

The GFOA Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of government accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a signifi- cant accomplishment by a government and its management team.

This award program was established to encourage and assist state and local governments to go above and beyond the minimum requirements of generally accepted accounting principles and prepare annual financial reports that demonstrate the spirit of transparency and full disclosure.

Reports submitted for consideration are reviewed by selected members of the GFOA professional staff and the GFOA Special Review Committee, including individuals with expertise in public sector financial reporting such as financial statement preparers, independent auditors, academics and other finance professionals.

Sheboygan County’s Comprehensive Annual Financial Report represents the culmination of all budgeting and accounting activities engaged in by the Sheboygan County management team throughout 2016, covering all funds of the county.

“Sheboygan County has a strong management team in place, and I commend the county administrator and finance department for their leadership in conducting the financial operations of the county,” said Sheboygan Board Chairman Tom Wegner.

County Administrator Adam Payne heaped the bulk of the praise on Finance Director Wendy Charnon and her staff for their role in preparing the financial reports and assuring transparency and full disclosure to the citizens of Sheboygan County.

“Wendy is very hard working and conscientious,” Payne said. “She and the entire finance department can all take pride in this tremendous accomplishment.”

The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada is a non-profit professional association serving approximately 19,000 government finance professionals with offices located in Chicago and Washington, D.C.

Finance Committee Chairman Greg Weggeman said this is the fourth consecutive year that Sheboygan County has received this prestigious recognition.

“This award reflects our track record of fiscal responsibility and culture of collaboration and continuous improvement,” Weggeman said.
