Tigers earn OT win in season debut

NEW HOLSTEIN – After surrendering a 10-point halftime lead, the Howards Grove Tigers pulled out a 76-72 overtime win over host New Holstein in a boys basketball game Nov. 21.

The nonconference battle was the season debut for both teams.

HG outscored the Huskies 14-10 in the overtime period, keyed by 7-for-8 shooting at the foul line. Jack Baldwin sank three free throws and Will Rautmann and Eric Reinemann made two each.

HG led 28-18 at halftime, sparked by Baldwin with 11 points and Reinemann, nine.

The Huskies outscored HG 44-34 in the second half, led by Ryan Steffes who exploded for 24 points, including two treys. The score was knotted at 62- 62 after regulation.

Steffes, a senior guard, finished the night with a gamehigh 31 points.

Reinemann, a senior forward, led the Tigers’ attack with 25 points and Baldwin, a junior guard, chipped in with 20. Reinemann hit a team-high three three-pointers.

“I thought they [Reinemann and Baldwin] both played exceptionally well, given it’s game one of the season,” said Tiger head coach Wade Georgeff.

“I’m extremely proud of all my guys. The energy we played with and the energy on the bench were amazing.

“To have a game like this right off the bat and to win it, is a great confidence builder – something we can build off of and get ready for conference play,” said Georgeff.

Blake Pedrin led HG in assists with four. Reinemann and Derek Stauss were the Tigers’ top rebounders with nine and eight, respectively. The Tigers held an impressive 39-16 rebounding edge.

“We also did a great job keeping them off the glass while attacking it offensively,” said Georgeff.

“NH deserves a ton of credit. They caught fire in the second half and executed their offense almost perfectly. Steffes is a really talented player.”
