Tigers’ defense shines in key BEC win

HILBERT – The Howards Grove Tigers held Hilbert to only 22-percent shooting (11 of 50) from the field overall to fuel a 51-36 win over Hilbert in Big East Conference boys basketball action here Tuesday night.

Hilbert is the defending BEC regular-season and tournament champion. The Wolves and HG are expected to be among the league title contenders this season.

Tuesday’s contest was the BEC opener for both teams. The Tigers are 3-0 overall and Hilbert is 0-1.

The Tigers built a 24-9 halftime lead. Senior forward Derek Stauss keyed HG’s offense in the first half with eight points.

“It was a big game and a big win for us. Hilbert figures to be in the top of the conference and they are the defending champs, so we knew we had to execute and work hard,” said Tiger head coach Wade Georgeff.

“Hilbert started out in a zone and we were able to knock down some threes which later on opened up the middle. They eventually switched to man and we were able to let our bigs work down low.”

Stauss and junior guard Jack Baldwin led a balanced Tiger attack with 13 points each, followed by senior forward Eric Reinemann with 12.

“Jack Baldwin played a great game – keeping our team in control on offense. Eric Reinemann did great on the boards again while Derek Stauss converted offensively in the post,” said Georgeff.

“Overall, I’m very pleased with our games. Obviously we still have some things to work on but to see the progress defensively each game, even from a year ago, is tremendous.”

Bennett Lau paced the Wolves in scoring with 12.
