Ward leads Resorters at Kimberly Invite

Ward won by a major decision, 9-0. – Photo by Mike McGill KIMBERLY – Senior Max Ward placed second at 152 pounds to lead the Elkhart Lake- Glenbeulah/ Howards Grove Resorters in Saturday’s Kimberly Papermaker Wrestling Invitational.

Ward won his first four matches in the tourney before losing by a medical forfeit in the championship match against Guenther Hebbe of Princeton. Ward, who sustained an injury in the semifinals [in an 8-7 win over Brytton Goymerac of Appleton North), recorded one pin and earned two major decisions.

The Resorters had two fifthplace finishers in Matthew Schorer and Jon Roll at 220 and 285, respectively. Schorer pinned Merrill’s Walker Bathke in the fifth-place match in 1:07. Roll scored a pin in the fifthplace match against Julien Walker of Sun Prairie in 31 seconds.

Appleton North won the 16- team tournament with 416.5 points. Elkhart took 14th with 180. The Resorters had only seven wrestlers who competed.

“For the most part I was happy with the way our guys wrestled today. There definitely were a few matches that our guys should have won but came up short,” said Resorter head coach Larry Ward.

“Watching our guys compete the last two days gives us great feedback on what we need to focus on in practice.”

EL-G/HG competed in a junior varsity tourney Friday at Kimberly.

Also competing for the Resorters in Saturday’s invitational were Cody Behnke who placed eighth at 126 pounds; Raistlin Lopez-Lloyd, 11th, 132; Cody Nelson, eighth, 138; and Yoshi Sesoko, 10th at 160.

Elkhart crowned three champions in the JV tourney – Jesse Guerrero at 138, Ben Meiselwitz, 160 and Kurt Theobald at 182.
