Senior leaders crucial for Resorters

ELKHART LAKE – The 2017-2018 Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah boys basketball team returns senior leadership this season.

New Resorter head coach Leroy Hamilton is excited about the overall makeup of the Resorters for the season.

“We have five returning seniors who are great leaders,” said Hamilton. “These guys work their butts off in practice and I expect that they will do well.”

Returning for Elkhart are seniors Dante Miller, Noah Ruh, Kyle Lutzke, Justin Schultz and Caleb Broaddus. Newcomers include senior Sam Lutzke, juniors Zach Bauer, Brandon Goetsch, Bryce Stiko and freshmen Austin Henschel and Greg Berres.

Broaddus led the team in scoring last season with an average pf 11.3 points per game. He also led in rebounds with 87.

“These guys will do what I ask them to do,” Hamilton commented. “They want to improve from last season. They’re hungry and a really great group of kids.”

Elkhart finished 1-12 in Big East Conference play last season (4-19 overall). The Resorters went 1-2 in the BEC Tournament and placed 13th. They lost to Milwaukee Academy of Science in a Division 5 first-round regional game.

Hamilton coached the Sheboygan Falls girls team for 13 seasons with three Eastern Wisconsin Conference titles. He replaced Ray Mlada who coached Elkhart the previous three seasons.

The new coach pointed out the team’s strengths.

“We have a good point guard in Dante Miller and a good shooting guard in Noah Ruh. Caleb Broaddus should lead us in scoring,” said Hamilton.

“Our weakness is probably playing experience but these guys make up for it with their work ethic.”

The Resorters lost seven seniors to graduation.

Hamilton thinks the key to Elkhart’s success will be the senior leadership.

His goals are to improve the program to be able to compete with the top teams in the Big East.

Hamilton feels that the BEC play will be strong this season with Howards Grove, Kohler and Oostburg being the title favorites.

Hilbert won the BEC regular season and tournament titles last season. HG was a D-4 sectional finalist.
