Near sparks Tigers to BEC win

HOWARDS GROVE – Freshman Maddy Near scored a season-high 16 points to lead the Howards Grove Tigers to a 57-40 girls basketball victory over visiting Sheboygan Christian Thursday night.

The Tigers raised their Big East Conference record to 3-3 (5-4 overall). The Eagles fell to 1-5 in the BEC (2-6 overall).

Freshmen Mackenzie Holzwart and Leah Parnitzke chipped in with 13 and 11 points, respectively, for HG. Holzwart also had a team-high 12 rebounds and five steals.

Parnitzke contributed three steals. The Tigers had an impressive 16 steals. Caitlin Schmid had a team-best four assists.

“Rebounding was something we determined to be key to winning this game and I thought overall we rebounded well,” said Tiger head coach Heidi Georgeff.

“Individually, our three freshmen [Near, Holzwart and Parnitzke] played well for us. Leah Parnitzke had a nice first half – sparking our offense with eight points. Maddy was a nice threat for us from both outside and inside

The Tigers built a 30-16 lead at halftime.

Ashley Flipse paced the Eagles in scoring with 17, keyed by 13 in the second half.
