Warriors snap Tigers’ winning streak

FREDONIA – The Ozaukee girls needed a strong second half here Friday to secure a 54-51 victory over Howards Grove in Big East Conference basketball.

“You can tell that Howards Grove has a very young team but they are going to be a force to deal with in the future,” said Warrior head coach Tim Wolff. “All eight girls who played really contributed to our win.”

The Warriors improved to 6-4 in the BEC (8-4 overall). The Tigers, who had a five-game winning streak broken, slipped to 6-4 in the league (8-5 overall).

The Tigers, who started three freshmen, one sophomore and one junior, took a 25-23 lead into halftime. Their biggest lead was 9-2 in the opening four minutes.

Ozaukee’s first lead of the night was 30-29 with 13:40 remaining. The Warriors built it up to 47-41 at 5:40 after consecutive buckets by Elisa Large, Becca Schauer and Abby Miller.

The Tigers responded with a 7-2 run, cutting the deficit to 49- 48 with 1:37 left. Schauer scored a bucket at 1:20 and Carla Wolff added a free throw with 47 seconds to go. Schauer sank two more free throws for a 54-48 lead.

Tiger freshman Mackenzie Holzwart tossed in a three-pointer with two seconds left.

Schauer led all scorers with 23 points. Holzwart paced the Tigers’ attack with 18.

Holzwart led HG in steals with six. Leah Parnitzke had a team-high three assists. Maddy Near led in blocked shots with four and rebounds, nine. Kayla Bender contributed eight boards.

“We got down in the second half due to missed shots and turnovers. Defensively, we weren’t able to stop Schaurer effectively. She beat us to the hoop too many times to count and our help wasn’t there when it needed to be,” said Tiger head coach Heidi Georgeff.

“I thought we had opportunities to win late in the game that we just weren’t able to capitalize on. We missed some key free throws down the stretch, we turned the ball over more than we should have and we weren’t able to make enough shots to pull this one out.”
