Tigers’ defense leads to BEC rout

REEDSVILLE – The Howards Grove Tigers’ defense has been very strong all season. Their defense excelled again Friday night to key a 68-36 drubbing of host Reedsville in Big East Conference boys basketball action.

HG held the Panthers to only 14 points in the second half and limited Reedsville to just 33-percent shooting from the field for the game.

“Our defense stole the show again and that’s a reflection of all 11 guys on the team. We continue to hold conference opponents to an average of 36 points per game,” said Tiger head coach Wade Georgeff.

The Tigers raised their BEC- leading record to 10-0 (14-0 overall). HG was ranked No. 2 in last week’s wissports.net Division 4 Coaches Poll. Reedsville fell to 1-8 in the BEC (4-9 overall).

“I thought we did a good job of setting the tone early. We worked for what we wanted against their 1-3-1 zone. Blake Pedrin’s ability to knock down the three-ball really opens things up inside for Eric Reinemann and Derek Stauss,” said Georgeff.

Pedrin, a junior guard, was an outstanding 5-for-8 (63 percent) from three-point range which accounted for all 15 of his points. His 12 points on four treys led HG to a 38-22 halftime advantage.

Reinemann, a senior forward, was HG’s top scorer with 19, including 11 in the first half. He was a scorching 8-for- 9 from the field for 89 percent. The Tigers shot an impressive 60 percent from the field.

Reinemann also had a teamhigh six rebounds. Jack Baldwin dished out a team-high seven assists and Stauss had four. Baldwin and Stauss led in steals with two each.

Brevin Wendland led the Panthers’ offense with 13 points.
