Panthers’ Mella named All-State HM


MACKADE MELLA MACKADE MELLA Senior Mackade Mella of Plymouth was named Wisconsin Football Coaches Association All-State Honorable Mention on defense at outside linebacker for the 2017 season.

Mella was voted the East Central Conference’s Co-Defensive Player of the Year and Co-Linebacker of the Year last season by the ECC coaches. He was a unanimous All-ECC first-team linebacker in 2017.

Mella made 76 total tackles which included 55 solos and 21 assists. He recorded 13 tackles for losses, five quarterback sacks and two interceptions.

Mella also forced seven fumbles, recovered two fumbles and returned a fumble for a touchdown.

“Mack had an outstanding year. He filled the stat sheet up throughout the year. He really played all over the field on defense,” said PHS head coach Dan Knaus.

Mella and Panther senior teammates Gabe Haun and Derek Novotny were named to the WFCA All-Northeast Region Team. Mella was selected as an outside linebacker, Haun at defensive end and Novotny at running back on offense.


GABE HAUN GABE HAUN Novotny was the ECC’s Offensive Back of the Year and a unanimous All-ECC firstteam running back. He rushed for 1,471 yards, the second-highest for a single season in school history, and ran for 22 TDs. Nick Mueller holds the PHS record with 1,691 yards in 1996.

Novotny averaged an outstanding 7.7 yards per carry. He caught seven passes for 62 yards.

“Derek had an outstanding year. He is a very explosive player that could go the distance at anytime,” said Knaus.

Haun was named to the All-ECC first team at defensive end. He recorded 69 total tackles which included 46 solos and 23 assists. Haun had 15 tackles for losses and recovered one fumble.

Gabe was very dominating at his defensive end position. Gabe plays with a great motor and caused a lot of disruption for our opponents,” Knaus pointed out.


DEREK NOVOTNY DEREK NOVOTNY Senior offensive lineman Nathan Garczynski of Sheboygan Falls was selected All-State Honorable Mention. Senior wide receiver Dayne Friday of Kiel was named to the Honorable-Mention offense.

ECC champion Kewaskum has four players who earned All-State honors, led by senior Tony Steger who was voted to the first-team offense at the utility position. Steger played quarterback and wide receiver.

Kewaskum has three players who earned Honorable Mention – senior Riley Donovan at the offensive lineman and defensive lineman positions, and senior inside linebacker Patrick Krier.
