St. Lawrence Seminary observes Catholic Schools’ Week

Each January, Catholic schools across the country take time to recognize the valuable education they provide. St. Lawrence Seminary observed the annual Catholic Schools Week celebration in January as well.

On Friday, Jan. 26, the celebration began with a mass honoring several staff members for their contributions to the school. Honored at the service for their commitments to the school were Br. Neal Plale, for his 40 years of service; Charles Lefeber, for 35 years of service; and Ron Schaefer upon his retirement.

Fr. Zoy Garibay, SLS Rector/ President who presided at the mass, explained how each of them contributed to the community in significant ways— acting as role models for the young men and building up the community. They, along with all of the staff members, parents, alumni, and benefactors, were acknowledged for making the Catholic community of SLS strong for nearly 160 years. The mass was followed by an allschool banquet where the honorees and their families were thanked once again for their commitment.

The celebration of Catholic Schools’ Week continued on Saturday as students celebrated the 45th annual Winter Carnival event. Organized as a day to beat the doldrums of winter by embracing the snow, the celebration had to change a little this year due to a lack of snow and temperatures in the upper 30s. Instead of sled races and broomball on the ice, students participated in bean bag tosses, dodgeball and other team games.

Though it wasn’t a snowfilled celebration, it was a great way to enjoy some friendly competition and fraternal bonding. The mass and banquet, along with Winter Carnival, were great events for SLS that served as an acknowledgement of the power of Catholic schools to bring people together and the formation they provide.
