Winter driving challenge

There’s always something happening at Road America and this past Saturday was no exception. The Second Winter Autocross session was held. Winter Autocross is a bit like motocross but without the jumps ... drivers just go through the snow. Three categories are include:; RWD, FWD and AWD/4WD in three disciplines: autocross, braking challenge and drag racing. Cars of every type imaginable from brand new Porsches and Audis to 70s era Oldsmobiles and Buicks take part. The autocross portion is held on the three paddocks and the course goes back and forth from lower to upper paddocks with all sorts of twists and bends. They compete against the clock for fastest time. The braking challenge is held at the cross-over. Participants are clocked. They take off fast to the bottom of turn 5, make a 180 degree turn around a cone and sprint back then have to stop within a prescribed box without sliding through it. The drag races are on pit row with no timing, just for fun against another car. Photos by Les Tension There’s always something happening at Road America and this past Saturday was no exception.
