Local libraries offer smorgasboard of on-line courses

Monarch Library System has acquired Gale Courses from Gale, part of Cengage Learning.

Through this unique program, residents of Dodge, Ozaukee, Sheboygan, and Washington counties can access instructor-led, online courses through their local library’s website and through the Monarch Catalog.

“We are very excited to offer more than 360 online courses to inspire and engage life-long learning in the communities in Dodge, Ozaukee, Sheboygan, and Washington counties,” said Amy Birtell, Director of Monarch Library System.

“With Gale Courses, patrons of our member libraries will be able to enroll in courses covering all types of topics and subjects. Whether someone is considering going back to school to pursue a degree or just interested in digital photography, the course catalog offers something for everyone.”

Gale Courses offer patrons access to hundreds of instructor-led online courses covering everything from health and wellness to creative writing, computer programming, GED test preparation and much more. Gale Courses are developed by expert instructors, many of whom are currently working at universities around the country, and have continuous enrollment dates.

Library patrons can use a current library card to enroll at no cost. Courses run for six weeks, with two new lessons released weekly (for a total of 12), and new sessions beginning every month. Sign up for a session and pick the start date that best fits in your schedule. If you are not able to complete a course, you may enroll again for a different session. The courses are entirely webbased with comprehensive lessons, quizzes, and assignments. A dedicated professional instructor coordinates every course by pacing learners, answering questions, giving feedback, and facilitating discussions. Coursework can be completed from library computers or remotely from home computers.

For more information about the catalog of courses offered or to enroll in a course, visit the Gale Courses/Monarch Library System website education.gale. com/l-monarchls/. Here you can browse through the course offerings in Accounting and Finance, Business, Computer Applications, Design and Composition, Healthcare and Medical, Language and Arts, Law and Legal, Personal Development, Teaching and Education, Technology, and Writing and Publishing. Click on a class that interests you to find a detailed description of the course, read a mini bio about the instructor, glance through the class syllabus, review requirements that are needed to take the course, and see what past students have to say. All of this can be done before you enroll.

Where will Gale Courses lead you?

Perhaps to a new job, a new outlook on your personal finances, the start to your own business, mastery of that new computer program you just can’t figure out on your own, or a Health Care Certificate.

Perhaps you’ll acquire a new account on Instagram with professional looking photos, becoming a whiz at helping your kids with their homework, or acceptance into your top choice school because you prepped for the SAT/ ACT.

You may move one step closer to becoming an IT guru and earning a variety of certificates in Technology, or traveling with confidence because you learned a second language. If you don’t have a current library card, stop in at your local library.
