Roncalli wins first state title

MADISON – The Manitowoc Roncalli Jets won the first boys state basketball championship in school history with a 53- 37 win over Marathon Saturday afternoon at UW-Madison’s Kohl Center.

The Jets outscored Marathon 39-20 in the second half of the Division 4 finals after trailing 17-14 at halftime. Mitchel Schneider sparked the Jets’ attack in the second half with 18 points after he was scoreless in the first half.

Chombi Lambert led Roncalli in scoring with 21. The Jets, who defeated Howards Grove in triple-overtime, 61- 58, in a sectional semifinal, finished their season with a 23-5 record. Marathon posted a 23-5 mark.

Roncalli routed Pardeeville in the semifinals, 82-48, on Thursday night. Lambert, a junior guard, exploded for 32 points to lead the Jets. Lambert was a red-hot 6-for-8 from three-point range.


Valders, a member of the Eastern Wisconsin Conference along with Roncalli, lost in the D-3 state finals to Prescott, 63- 62, on Saturday afternoon. Peter Brookshaw hit a three-pointer with only two seconds left which gave Prescott the win.

Valders had taken a 62-60 lead on a three-pointer by Kyle Tuma with 13 seconds remaining. Tuma scored a game-high 35 points, including 31 in the second half. Valders finished 24-4 and Prescott ended its season at 26-2.

In the D-3 semifinals Thursday afternoon, Valders edged Kettle Moraine Lutheran (Jackson), 63-61, in overtime on a jumper by Trent Hickmann with only one second left.

The winning basket came after Dallas Fletcher’s steal. The game was tied 61-61 after regulation.

KML, which shared the East Central Conference title with Waupun, finished 22-6. Solomon Zarling led KML in scoring with 22. Tuma was the top scorer with 24.
