Group forms to push 23 expansion

Expand Hwy 23 is a grass-roots joint-coalition between Sheboygan and Fond du Lac counties whose primary purpose is to raise awareness for the expansion of Highway 23 to four lanes for safety and sustained economic growth.

The coalition is comprised of citizens, prominent business owners and leaders, government officials, chambers of commerce and economic development corporations.

The coalition began meeting the second quarter of 2017 and has been working with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation for the completion of the Limited Scope Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (LS-SEIS) which is needed to re-ignite the expansion project. The LS-SEIS is slated to be completed by the middle of May with a public hearing to be held the middle of June.

Legislators from both counties were able to successfully secure $19 million in LET savings (savings from other transportation projects) in the transportation budget for the beginning of the State 23 expansion project as soon as it clears.

“The expansion of Highway 23 is long overdue. It dates back to the 1960s. The number of commuters and truck traffic between Fond du Lac and Sheboygan Counties continues to grow, and the expansion is imperative for the safety of those who travel this road daily,” states Deidre Martinez, executive director of the Sheboygan County Chamber.

Expand Hwy 23 has listened to the residents of both Fond du Lac and Sheboygan Counties at how imperative the completion of this expansion project is. The coalition has rolled out a Facebook page “Expand Hwy 23” where news regarding the project, history of State 23 and testimonials of those who travel State 23 can be shared.

“Businesses, employees and county residents have continued to express the critical need for the Highway 23 expansion as it relates to safety and commerce,” said Cecilia Harry, president and chief executive officer of Envision Greater Fond du Lac. “It’s time for this project to continue moving forward and be completed.”
