Rabe leads PHS at Manitowoc Invite

MANITOWOC – Lauren Rabe placed third in the 400-meter dash to pace the Plymouth Panthers in Friday’s Manitowoc Invitational girls indoor track meet.

Rabe ran a time of 1 minute, 7.25 seconds. The Panthers’ other place-winner was Allie Gruttner who captured eighth in 2:45.96.

Finishing ninth for PHS were the 640 relay in 1:42.44; Tanya Gilbertson in the shot put with 29-9½ and Katie Benedict in the long jump at 13-7¾. The relay included Emily Portschy, Jennifer Novotny, Ava Schilder and Lexi Sheridan.

De Pere won the 16-team meet with 117 points. Sheboygan Falls placed fifth with 45.5 and PHS took 15th with seven.

“Our girls team is still finding its way as they round into shape and as we determine who our varsity performers are,” said Panther head coach Jay Grosshuesch.

“We were hoping to do better in this meet but we are optimistic that we have a hard-working group of girls that can improve and be real competitive by the end of the season.

“We were led in this meet by our mid-distance group. Lauren and Allie scored our points and they both ran strong races,” said Grosshuesch.

“We had three field-event athletes that performed well and just missed scoring points – Tanya in the shot put, Katie in the long jump and Jennifer in the pole vault.”

Novotny placed 10th in the pole vault with a 6-6 effort. The sixth through ninth places were also 6-6 and finished ahead of Novotny due to fewer misses.
