High School Students look to their Futures

“Explore Your Future” Event Plays Critical Role in Students’ Career Development

The Sheboygan County Chamber of Commerce and its Business-Education Partnership Committee organized the event that replaced the annual, long-running Career Connections event. Over 75 volunteers with specific backgrounds and training, such as organizational development professionals, educators, social media experts, members of the Business-Education Partnership, INSPIRE Sheboygan County and Red Raider Manufacturing, assisted with the workshop. Even company mascots from Rockline Industries, Inc., Plastics Engineering Company, Kohler Co., Vollrath and Sargento Foods joined in the fun!

Monica Mahler of Sargento Foods Inc. and facilitator for “What is your personality type?” said, “Explore Your Future is about opening the possibilities for students which can only lead to good things.”

“We were very pleased with how Explore Your Future turned out, especially since this was our first year with the new format. Students really enjoyed learning about their personality types and how personalities play an important role in their career choice,” said Tammy Graf, director of workforce development for the Sheboygan County Chamber of Commerce. “This session added a valuable layer to their academic and career planning process. It really made them stop and think.”

The Wisconsin Department of Instruction requires academic and career planning of all public school districts that serve students in grades 6-12, an initiative that began in fall 2017. Graf said that as a next step after the workshop, students will be challenged to actively participate in one or more work-based learning experiences in their career area of interest and include them in their academic and career plan for 11th and 12th grades.

Sponsors for Explore Your Future were AT&T, Masters Gallery Foods and Van Horn Automotive Group.
