AFS students to talk about their countries

AFS foreign-exchange students at Plymouth High School again will share information about their home countries with the public.

The final set of 2017-18 presentations will begin at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 8 at Generations, 1500 Douglas Drive, Plymouth. Presenting will be Federica from Italy, Luis from Norway, Lucas from Spain, and Sanae from Japan. Time for questions and mingling will follow the presentations.

PHS is hosting 10 students this year, from Austria, the Dominican Republic, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Norway, Spain, and Turkey. In addition, the chapter is including Ice from Thailand, who is living in Cedar Grove, in its events.

The Plymouth High School AFS chapter is one of the most active in the state, hosting 85 students from 30 different countries since 2008-09. AFS, a partnership of volunteer-based nonprofit organizations foster- intercultural engagement, named PHS one of its 100 Top Schools in 2013, 2014 and 2015. Looking for host families for high school exchange students coming from more than 90 countries in August and September.

Each year, AFS welcomes more than 2,200 international students to the United States. These outstanding young people are selected in their home countries to study in U.S. high schools and are eager to experience what life in America.

Host families provide a bed and meals, share their daily lives with students, and help guide and support students as they would their own children. Families and their hosted students receive ongoing support from AFS staff and experienced, local volunteers.
