Kettle Karvers host show

The Kettle Karvers Klub of Sheboygan County is set to host its 28th annual “Artistry in Wood” woodcarving show and competition at Lakers Ice Center in Sheboygan on Saturday, April 21.

The show, which runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., will include many talented carvers, as well as wood and tool venders.

A youth carving session will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Children ages 12 and up with a parent or guardian present will be able to join a Kettle Karvers Klub member for a hands-on carving project.

Local carver Gene Mathes will present a demonstration of walking stick/canoe carving and decorating at 1 p.m.

The featured carver for this year's show is Roger Carlson of Kiel. Carlson began carving in junior high school. His first carving project was a pig using a pocket knife and X-acto knives. He later moved on to carve chains, shore birds and spoons.

Since his retirement, Carlson has attended carving classes from a wide variety of talented instructor. He enjoys many different types of carving, including caricature, birds, animals, relief and gourds, as well as woodburning.

The Sheboygan Youth Hockey Association will provide concessions during the event.

Admission is $2 for those age 13 and over. Children age 12 and under will be admitted free.

The Kettle Karvers Klub meets the first Wednesday of every month at 6:30 p.m. at Generations in Plymouth.

Anyone interested in becoming a club member is welcome to attend a meeting as a guest. Annual membership dues are $10.
