The contest was the season opener for the two arch-rivals. Both teams’ first three scheduled game this season were postponed due to inclement weather.

An eight-run outburst by the Tigers in the bottom of the fifth gave them a 13-6 cushion but the Resorters quickly answered with a nine-run explosion in the top of the sixth to go up 15-13.

The Tigers took the lead for good, 19-15, with a six-run surge in their half of the sixth.

The teams combined for a whopping 39 hits and 12 errors.

HG pounded out 24 hits. Freshman Maddie Koenig sparked the Tigers’ attack with a team-high five hits, including a two-run homer in the fifth, and four RBIs. Koenig also led in runs with four. Evelynn Spaeth contributed four hits and three RBIs.

Zayla Mueller and Courtney Binversie collected three hits each for HG. Mueller and Binversie had three and two RBIs, respectively.

Senior Aryka Klemme swung the hot bat for the Resorters with a team-high four hits and five RBIs. Kaylin Kalbacken cracked three hits, followed by Ciara Hassinger and Megan Waage with two apiece.

Waage scored a team-best three runs.

“In an early game we could tell the nerves from two very young teams. On a cold night there was a lot of hitting and a lot of sloppy defense because of nerves,” said Tiger head coach Tom Heier.

“It was a weird game all around and we are glad to get out of this with a win.”
