HOWARDS GROVE – The Howards Grove/Elkhart Lake- Glenbeulah boys tennis team lacks varsity experience but hopes to improve as the season progresses.

The Tigers lost 10 seniors to graduation and return only four letter winners from last season. One of the letter winners is senior Eric Reinemann who advanced to Division 2 sectional play last season with Keegan Rhynas (2017 grad). Reinemann and Rhynas lost in the first round of the sectional.

Reinemann is playing No. 1 singles this year. The other letter winners back are seniors Chase Williams and Brandon Kushnier who are teaming up at No. 1 doubles, and junior Zach Ziegelbauer who is at No. 3 singles.

“We have a few athletes who have joined the tennis team for the first time. It’s always great to have new athletes come out and learn the game of tennis,” said ninth-year Tiger head coach Elizabeth Hill. “We lack experience, compared to a lot of our competition. We do have a few returning letter winners from last year but will need to see leadership from the younger players to fill out the lineup.”

Hill said the newcomers who have impressed her include junior Dylan Schukow, senior Matilde Gatto and junior Austin Patske.

“All three have some natural athletic capabilities and are open to improving and learning the game of tennis,” Hill pointed out.

The coach said the keys for the team to have success are to be open to suggestions for improvement but most importantly have fun.

“My goal is to finish in the top half of the Eastern Wisconsin Conference,” said Hill.

The Tigers finished eighth in the EWC race last year with a 1-7 dual record. Kohler, who Hill favors to win the EWC title, is the defending league champion.

The Tigers’ roster includes two EL-G students – seniors Sarah Niemi, and Sansim Sariaslan (exchange student from Turkey).
