Long-distance cycle training offered

Safe riding skills, endurance, and group camaraderie are features of the Team Maywood distance cycling program. Each summer, cyclists and volunteer trainers come together through Team Maywood to train for longdistance cycling events. This year’s program kicks off on May 7 at 5:30pm with an informational meeting.

The mission of the program is to create a more bicycle friendly community through cycling awareness, education, safety advocacy, and promotion of bicycling for fun, fitness, and transportation.

Team Maywood features weekly Monday evening and scheduled weekend rides to prepare cyclists for long distance rides including 100-mile century events. Offering four riding levels, the program is available to beginning through expert cyclists.

Monday rides focus on skill building and group riding techniques. Participants also enjoy longer weekend rides complete with SAG service. Weekend rides focus on building endurance with the program culminating in the Maywood Earth Ride on September 15, 2018. Additional features of the program include workshops and social gatherings after some of the rides.

A unique feature of the program is its team of dedicated volunteer trainers. These individuals donate their time and skills for the Monday and weekend rides. The trainers bring a wealth of experience with several of the trainers competing in events throughout the state. In the beginning levels, trainers focus their attention on safe bike handling skills. In the advanced groups, riders work on group riding skills such as drafting.

Those wanting to learn more about Team Maywood should attend the informational meeting. Rides for the program begin Monday, May 14.

Program brochures for Team Maywood are available at area bike shops and the Maywood Ecology Center, or online at www.GoMaywood.org/DBTprogram. For more information call (920) 459-3906.
