Panthers sweep Ripon Invitational titles

RIPON – The Plymouth Panthers won the Ripon Invitational boys and girls indoor meets Friday at Ripon College’s Willmore Center.

The Panthers were originally scheduled to compete in the West Bend Invitational on Friday but the meet was canceled.

Junior Gabi Mella was a triple winner in leading the PHS girls to victory. Mella earned first in the 60-meter dash in 8.40 seconds, the 200 in 27.41 and the long jump with a 16-9 performance.

In the seven-team girls meet, the Panthers rolled up 149 points, followed by Wautoma with 122.50. PHS won seven events.

The PHS boys won six events en route to racking up 158 points. Ripon was second at 126.

The Panthers were led by senior Mason Guell who was a double-winner. Guell captured the 400 dash in 52.62 and the triple jump at 42-4.

“Our boys had a great night, in the field events especially. Given our lack of practice time in these events we did very well,” said PHS head coach Jay Grosshuesch.

“Jaxsen [Schermacher] and Kory [Tetschlag] both looked real good as they hit personal records [in the pole vault].”

“Mason and Derek Novotny and Derek Holec had quality jumps and Korey Friederichs hit a PR in the shot put. We had a nice night on the track as well. Our mid-distance and distance runners scored multiple times,” Grosshuesch pointed out.

“For the girls, the field events were a strong part of this meet. Cece [Huhn] and Ellie [Staehling] had great nights in the high jump, hitting PRs. All three of our long jumpers also hit PRs and Emily [LaVine] had a nice throw in the shot put.

“Gabi led us on the track with double wins in the sprints. She looks real good in the early season. Lauren [Rabe] also ran a great 400 with a strong finish,” said the coach.
