UW centers offer summer engineering experience courses

Both the University of Wisconsin Sheboygan and the University of Wisconsin-Washington County are expanding their High School Engineering and Leadership Experience courses scheduled for June.

UW-Washington County in West Bend will hold the course from June 18-22, while UWSheboygan offers it from June 25-29.

The college preparation course now includes a new leadership component as well as additional engineering company visits.

Administered through the Continuing Education Department, the program is designed for high school junior and seniors interested in pursing a career in engineering.

“I'm so thankful for the rallying support of the area engineering companies this year,”said Holly Wehrwahn, continuing education director. “Because of the growing response, our students will come away with multiple experiences about what it's like to be an engineer at these companies who they've already networked with as they begin college.”

The program includes an optional college credit opportunity that can be applied at any UW campus.

Geared toward high juniors and seniors who are interested in pursuing a career in engineering, the primary objective is for students to understand more broadly about the different types of engineering fields that exist and recognize which discipline best suits their interests and skill sets.

The course is designed for students to experience “a day in the life of an engineer.” During the week, students visit a variety of local engineering companies that represent a main discipline of engineering such as mechanical, manufacturing, electrical, civil, design and more.

Facility tours as well as question and answer sessions with company engineers over lunch provide unique opportunities for students to ask for advice about careers and learn about specific job duties.

Firms participating with UW-Sheboygan include American Orthodontics, Arch Electric, Bemis Manufacturing, Donohue and Rockline Industries, with additional firms expected to confirm soon.

Firms participating at West Bend so far include Engineering Resource Center, LECO, Metalcraft of Mayville, JW Speaker, Steiner Electric, Weasler and Weld-Fab Manufacturing.
