Courthouse entrance work

The Sheboygan County Transportation Department has begun excavations for a new circle drive in front of the Sheboygan County Courthouse. This work will block access to the courthouse from Sixth Street except by way of the sidewalks near the Law Enforcement Center.

In the coming weeks, Koenig Construction will also work to rebuild the granite steps and flag pole bases as well as building a handicap accessible ramp at the front steps. During this construction, the front doors will be inaccessible and all access to the courthouse will be through the back doors located in the alley between the courthouse and annex. Please obey all the signs directing visitors to the back doors, and avoid the construction areas as trucks will be entering and exiting the site routinely.

The construction is part of Sheboygan County’s enhancements to security at the courthouse. Once construction is complete, the courthouse will be using a single entrance/exit with security personnel, an x-ray machine and metal detectors similar to an airport. The newly-constructed circle drive will include handicap parking, handicap ramp at the steps and power door operators, and everyone will need to use the front entrance doors.

“The most important responsibility we have is to provide a safe work environment for our employees and visiting public,” said County Board Chairman Tom Wegner. “A lot goes on in the county courthouse, and emotions can run high.”

The courthouse security enhancements are the culmination of the work of a County Security ad hoc Committee appointed by the county administrator and comprised of over 20 participants.

“I appreciate the input of our employees and support of the County Board,” County Administrator Adam Payne said. “This is a significant investment and will make the building more handicap accessible, safe and secure.”
