Miscues haunt Tigers in BEC defeat

Spaeth had three hits in the April 30 game against Cedar Grove. – Review photo by Greg Ceilley BELGIUM – Poor fielding hurt the Howards Grove Tigers as they lost a wild one, 22-19, against Cedar Grove-Belgium in a Big East Conference softball game here April 30.

The Tigers committed a whopping nine errors which led to 10 unearned runs. HG made five errors in the bottom of the first inning which helped the Rockets tally five runs.

Cedar Grove erupted for 10 runs in the third to go up 15-8.

The Tigers pounded out 18 hits and the Rockets exploded for 16.

Zayla Mueller led the Tigers’ offense with four hits, followed by Evelynn Spaeth and Lexi Weber with three each. Maddie Koenig added two hits, both ground-rule doubles.

Koenig had a team-high four RBIs and Spaeth and Weber contributed three apiece. Mueller led in runs with four.

Olivia Piatek paced the Rockets in hits with three. Maria Dries ripped a solo home run.

The winning pitcher was Anna Thiele. Courtney Binversie was the losing hurler.
