Holzwart’s late goal gives Tigers BEC win

NEENAH – Freshman forward Mackenzie Holzwart’s goal with about six minutes left gave the Howards Grove Tigers a 2-1 girls win over St. Mary Catholic here Thursday evening.

The Tigers, ranked No. 3 in last week’s Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association Division 4 poll, upped their Big East Conference record to 3-1 (5-1-1 overall). The Zephyrs dropped to 4-2 in the BEC (4-4 overall).

“Overall, it may have been the best game we have played this year. Our defense remains solid and our midfield and offense are beginning to find a rhythm,” said Tiger head coach David Kisiolek.

Lexi Matte gave HG a 1-0 lead with a goal in the first half, assisted by Kayla Gilligan.

SMC tied the match, 1-1, at halftime on a goal by Ava Staehler, assisted by Sydney Andersen.

HG led 15-10 in shots on goal. Tiger goalie Sara Marten had seven saves and Zephyr goalie Maddy Botke made eight.

“The outside midfielders and forwards [Matte, Emily Weseljak, Kennedy Theobald and Gilligan] did an excellent job of supporting our defense. Klara Szklarska [an exchange student from Poland] filled in admirably for the injured Kayla Bender at center forward,” said Kisiolek.
