Welding instructor earns national honor

The American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) recently named Lakeshore Technical College faculty member Dave Saunders a national recipient of its inaugural Dale P. Parnell Distinguished Faculty designation.

Named in honor of former AACC President and CEO Dale P. Parnell, the association established the designation to recognize individuals making a difference in the classroom.

Saunders, a welding instructor and program coordinator at LTC, received his award during the annual AACC convention in Dallas on April 29.

Criteria for nominees included: Demonstrating passion for the students and the classroom; showing a willingness to support students, inside and outside of the classroom; being inclined to participate in college committees; and going above and beyond what is required to ensure that students are successful in their academic endeavors.

“Dave is deserving of this recognition because he makes a difference in the lives of LTC students. They not only learn welding skills in his classroom, but they learn life skills,” said LTC Interim Dean of Manufacturing, Ag and STEM Sheila Schetter. “He has a passion for helping students learn, for helping them to have a better life, for helping them to gain employment, for ensuring that they apply for scholarships, and for ensuring they get registered in the right classes. Dave always has the student front of mind.”

Saunders has taught welding at LTC since 1999.
