Panthers win opener in ECC Soccer Tourney

JACKSON – Senior Sydney Robinson’s goal in the 53rd minute gave the Plymouth Panthers a 1-0 win over host Kettle Moraine Lutheran in round one of the East Central Conference Girls Soccer Tournament’s upper division.

PHS raised its ECC record to 7-0-1 and is tied for first in the upper division with Winneconne (7-0-1). The Panthers were scheduled to play Winneconne in round two on Tuesday, May 22 in Plymouth.

Freshman Emma Welsch assisted on the game-winning goal. Welsch dribbled the ball along the goal line on the right flank and then delivered it angled away from the goal and Robinson stepped in and finished for the score.

The Panthers, ranked No. 7 in last week’s Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association Division 3 poll, improved to 12-1-1 overall. The Chargers dropped to 4-4 in the ECC (6- 8-1 overall).

The Panthers, which posted its 12th shutout this season, led 16-1 in shots on goal. PHS goalie Sam Meyer made one save.

“Emma Welsch gave us a spark in the second half. She helped control the midfield and was able to work to set Sydney up with a game-winning pass across the face of the goal. Without that ball, we probably leave the game with a tie,” said PHS head coach Brad Feick.

“Our second half was much better than our first. I thought that defensively we stepped forward to win balls rather than retreating. Our possession was much better. We dropped the ball back and held possession.”
