PHS, HG/EL-G advance No. 1 doubles teams

GREEN BAY – Plymouth and Howards Grove/Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah qualified their No. 1 doubles teams for Division 2 sectional play at the subsectional meet here Tuesday.

Advancing for PHS are seniors Drew Schmitt and Isaac Fintak. Qualifying for HG/ EL-G are seniors Eric Reinemann and Brandon Kushnier.

The sectional meet was scheduled for Wednesday, May 23 at the Sports Core in Kohler. The semifinalists in the No. 1 flights for singles and doubles, and the finalists in flights 2-4 for singles and 2-3 for doubles advance to the sectional level.

Schmitt and Fintak, 9-8 this season, defeated a Kohler team in first-round action, 6-1, 6-7 (6-8), 6-4 to advance.

“The match was very intense and Drew and Isaac began with so much energy and they really thrived off of each other in the first set. Kohler settled down and found their way a bit in the second but we still had a chance to end it in the tiebreaker being up 6-3 before losing five straight points,” said PHS head coach Scott Milslagle.

“Drew and Isaac got down early in the third [set] before finding their second wind and a good dose of confidence, and took home the win and advance.”

Plymouth’s Nos. 2 and 3 doubles teams won their firstround matches before losing in the semifinals. Mason Dale and Taylor Hau competed at No. 2, and Luke McKinch and Joey Sebranek were at No. 3.

Also winning a first-round match for the Panthers was AJ Osieczanek at No. 4 singles. He lost in the semifinals to Kohler’s Johnny Vallo.

Reinemann and Kushnier, 8-4 on the season, beat a Green Bay West team (scores unavailable) in the first round to advance.

“Eric had some great downthe line winners and Brandon started to find his place up at the net,” said HG/EL-G head coach Elizabeth Hill.

Also winning in the first round for the Tigers were Chase Williams and Matilde Gatto at No. 2 doubles. Williams and Gatto defeated a St. Mary Catholic (Neenah) duo and then lost in the semifinals to Kohler’s Joe Conklin and Leo Fink.

Hill thought Williams and Gatto played some of their best tennis of the season in the win over St. Mary Catholic.

Kohler and Manitowoc Roncalli qualified six of the seven flights for the sectional to lead the field. Roncalli won the nine-team subsectional with 24 points, followed by Kohler with 22.

PHS tied for third with Sheboygan Falls at eight points each. HG/EL-G shared fifth with host Green Bay West at six apiece.
