Guell leads Panthers’ strong sectional showing

PHS placed seventh in the relay. – Photo by Tyler Luedtke HARTFORD – Senior Mason Guell qualified for state in three events to lead the Plymouth boys team at the Division 1 sectional track meet here Thursday.

Guell advanced to state in the 400-meter dash with a second-place finish in 50.21 seconds, the long jump with a winning distance of 21-9¼ and in the triple jump where he took second at 42-11¼.

Also qualifying for state for the PHS Panther boys is Jaxsen Schermacher in the pole vault at 14-6. The top-three finishers in each boys and girls sectional event automatically qualify for the state meet to be held Friday and Saturday at UW-La Crosse’s Memorial Stadium.

The Panther girls have three state qualifiers – Emily LaVine who earned first in the shot put with 35-1½; Lauren Rabe, third in the 400-meter dash in 58.90 seconds; and Cece Huhn who took second in the high jump at 5-2.

Smith finished seventh. – Photo by Tyler Luedtke “Our athletes had a great night, with numerous qualifiers and some strong performances from our athletes that did not qualify.,” said Panther head coach Jay Grosshuesch.

“Mason had another fantastic night – qualifying for state in three events and doing so with some great efforts. Jaxsen also had a great night against some quality competition.

“Emily and Cece had clutch efforts in their field events to qualify for state,” said Grosshuesch.

The PHS boys and girls finished seventh in both meets with 39 and 47 points, respectively.
