HG/EL-G doubles team advances to state

KOHLER – Eric Reinemann and Brandon Kushnier of Howards Grove/Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah qualified for the Division 2 boys state tennis tournament in doubles with a fourth-place finish at the sectional here Wednesday at the Sports Core.

Reinemann and Kushnier competed in the No. 1 flight. Their first-round win over a Lakeland team, 6-4, 4-6, 10-5 (point tiebreaker to decide match) clinched at least a fourth place.

The HG duo lost its next two matches to Two Rivers (4-6, 4-6) and Manitowoc Roncalli (1-6, 6-4, 8-10 tiebreaker).

Plymouth’s No. 1 doubles team of Drew Schmitt and Isaac Fintak bowed out in the first round with an 0-6, 0-6 loss to eventual champion Appleton Xavier.

The top-four finishers in singles and doubles in flight 1 and the top finisher in singles and doubles for flight 2 qualify for the state meet. The state tourney will be held Thursday though Saturday at UW-Madison’s Nielsen Tennis Stadium.

“I’m so proud of these guys. They played a great state-qualifying match versus Lakeland,” said HG/EL-G head coach Elizabeth Hill.

Hill thought Reinemann and Kushnier played together well and attacked the ball well against Lakeland which was crucial to the win.

“Unfortunately, our boys [Schmitt and Fintak] drew the short straw coming in as the fourth seed and having to play an undefeated, top-ranked Xavier team who advanced at the state tournament last season and showed why in today’s match,” said PHS head coach Scott Milslagle.

Xavier’s David Horak and Konnor Barth earned first in the No. 1 doubles flight and are 25-1 on the season.

Kohler won the sectional with 48 points and advances to the state team tourney.
