Hearing on State 23 expansion

Citizens residing near the State 23 corridor from Plymouth to Fond du Lac are encouraged to attend an upcoming Wisconsin Department of Transportation (DOT) public hearing on the future of the proposed four-lane highway expansion project on Tuesday, June 19 from 6-8 p.m. at UW-Fond du Lac.

A newly completed environmental analysis was recently completed on the State 23 corridor and the state has been working closely with the Federal Highway Administration on the new limited scope environmental review.

The new environmental analysis became necessary due to a 2015 ruling by U.S. District Judge Lynn Adelman.

Judge Adelman blocked the State 23 project the weekend before construction was set to begin in response to a lawsuit by Madisonbased 1,000 Friends of Wisconsin.

On the third anniversary of Judge Adelman’s decision, the new analysis suggests a four-lane expansion is needed to improve operational efficiency and enhance safety.

During a public comment period on the analysis last fall, more than 600 residents indicated support for a four-lane expansion of State 23. Only 24 favored simply adding passing lanes, the next highest alternative.

The new public hearing is required in order for the federal government to give final approval for the project.
