Rockets edge HG, earn share of BEC title

CEDAR GROVE – Abby Kraus scored the winning goal in the 69th minute as Cedar Grove-Belgium edged the Howards Grove Tigers, 1-0, in a Big East Conference girls soccer match here May 24.

The Rockets (11-1-1 final regular-season record), ranked No. 4 in this week’s Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association Division 4 poll, finished 7-0-1 in the BEC. CG-B shared the championship with Oostburg (7-0-1 in league).

The Tigers, ranked No. 5 in D-4 last week (unranked this week), finished 4-3-1 in BEC play and ended the regular season at 9-3-3.

“I was pleased with the way we bounced back from a very lackluster performance at Random Lake [May 22]. Cedar Grove is a good team. Our girls played a very good game as did the girls from Cedar Grove,” said Tiger head coach David Kisiolek.

The Tigers were coming off a 0-0 tie with Random Lake.

The Rockets held a 24-9 edge in shots on goal. Tiger goalie Sara Marten made 18 saves and Rocket goalkeeper Brooke Braga had six.

“We played without our leading scorer Mack [Mackenzie] Holzwart. Holzwart is nursing a knee injury and is expected to return next week [week of May 28-June 3]. Sophomores Paige Kalmerton and Lexi Matte filled in admirably for Holzwart,” said Kisiolek.
