Learn to drive a team of horses at Wade House

Wade House Historic Site will once again be hosting their hands-on carriage driving class: Learn to Drive a Team of Horses. “This class is great for beginners hoping to learn the basics of carriage driving,” said David Warner, site director at Wade House. “This unique experience covers everything from preparing a horse for harness to proper vocal and rein commands.” Learn to Drive a Team of Horses is a one day class which lasts for approximately eight hours. This class is offered on the following dates: Saturday, June 9; Saturday, July 14; and Saturday, Aug. 4. From 8:45-11 a.m. the instructor, Gary Sellen, a seasoned horse owner, and driver, will teach the basics of carriage driving. This will include getting participants accustomed to the draft horses, brushing and cleaning, proper harness adjustment and hitching a team of horses to a wagon or carriage. From 12 noon-5 p.m. participants will get a chance to ride with Wade House drivers to gain additional experience. The focus on this portion of the class will include learning the vocal commands that are a major part of controlling horses and the preferred method of directing the horse. Participants will also become familiar with rein commands, a secondary method of controlling horses. This hands-on course costs $100 per person and includes lunch. Advance reservations are required and the class size is limited to four in order to provide the best experience for each participant as well as the horses. In order to reserve a spot, visit wadehouse.org or call Jim Willaert at 920-526-3271 ext. 108. Reservations will be accepted until the day of the program.
