Kiel Band hosts statewide Bandmaster’s Association

The Kiel Municipal Band continues its tradition of summer concerts in City Park beginning Wednesday, June 13 at 7 p.m.

The KMB, under the direction of Jon Meyer, will present a varied mix of marches, popular tunes, and traditional band music.

The KMB is also serving as the host band for the 2018 summer convention of the Wisconsin Bandmasters' Association.

The WBA has been in existence since 1937, when the founding members met in Kohler for the first convention.

WBA members who perform in the Kiel Municipal Band include Donna Wirth (the executive secretary of the WBA), Ernst Gutschow (who serves on the board of directors) and Jon Meyer (the current president of the WBA).

During this concert, which is the closing part of the convention, a number of WBA members will guest conduct the band.

The opening march will be “America On Guard,” the official march of the Wisconsin Bandmasters' Association, jointly composed by two of the founding members of the WBA, Ernst Weber of Wautoma and Theodore Steinmetz of Portage.

As a spotlight feature of two of the Kiel Municipal Band's saxophonists, Cindy Sohn and her sister Sue Toepel will perform the “Flower Duet” of French composer Leo Delibes.

Lisa Zemlock, a New Holstein native and band director at Winneconne Middle School, will conduct “Goin' Home,” an arrangement of the slow movement of Antonin Dvorak's “New World Symphony.”

Another march by Theodore Steinmetz, “32nd Division March” written in honor of the famed Wisconsin 32nd Division will be conducted by Kohler High School band director, Rich Tengowski.

Ernst Gutschow will lead the KMB in one of its famous German-styled marches, “Mit Sang und Klang (With Song and Sound)” by Kiel composer Emil Meinardus.

The concert will close with former Chippewa Falls band director Robert Koepsel conducting

“On, Wisconsin.”

The concert is free, family friendly, and open to everyone.

The location in case of rain is the City Hall second floor gym, which is handicapped accessible and air-conditioned.
