Tigers stave off Warriors’ comeback

The Howards Grove Tigers held off a furious rally by visiting Ozaukee to post a 15-12 win in a Big East Conference baseball game Friday night.

The contest was a match-up of BEC small-school division teams. The Tigers upped their conference record to 5-1 (5-1 overall).

HG mounted a 14-0 lead after only three innings, fueled by a six-run outburst in the bottom of the second inning. Jack Lilyquist, Eric Reinemann, Isaac Dirker, Alec Danen and Ryan Splittgerber contributed one RBI each in the frame.

The Warriors outscored HG 12-1 over the final 3½ innings.

HG rapped out 10 hits, drew six walks and stole a season high 17 bases. Dirker and Danen had a team-high three hits each.

Danen paced the Tigers in RBIs with four and Dirker had three. Reinemann led in steals and runs scored with four each.

Splittgerber was the Tigers’ starting pitcher and picked up the win. He allowed seven runs (five earned) on seven hits with two walks and six strikeouts in five innings.

Reinemann pitched the final two-thirds of an inning and earned a save. He gave up zero runs on one hit with no walks and strikeouts.


In BEC play May 31, the Tigers earned a 5-3 win over the host Sheboygan Falls Falcons (BEC large-school division team).

HG scored four runs in the top of the fifth to take a 4-2 lead. The key hit was a two-run single by Isaac Dirker. Lilyquist had an RBI single and Splittgerber contributed a run-scoring groundout.

The Tigers outhit Falls 10- 6, led by Dirker with three. Nic Koenig and Danen had two hits apiece. Dirker led in RBIs with a pair.

Koenig started on the mound and threw 6-2/3 innings en route to the victory. The junior surrendered three runs (two earned) on six hits with one walk, two hit batters and five strikeouts.

Hayden Smith notched a save after striking out the only batter he faced which ended the contest.

Jon Bassuener paced the Falcons in hits with two.

Jared Petrie was the losing hurler. Petrie started and went six innings – allowing five earned runs on nine hits with two walks, one hit batter and one strikeout.
