Miller sparks PHS bats in BEC win

Senior Sam Miller collected a team-high three hits and four RBIs to power the Plymouth Panthers to a 10-0 rout over Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah in Big East Conference baseball action Friday evening at Elkhart.

The Panthers raised their BEC record to 8-1 (8-4 overall). PHS leads the conference’s large school division. The Resorters, a BEC small-school division team, dropped to 0-7 in the league (0-7 overall).

Aiden Reilly and Holden Reilly contributed two hits each for the Panthers who banged out 10. Aiden Reilly also had two RBIs.

Cooper Gosse paced PHS in runs scored with three.

Three PHS pitchers combined for a four-hit shutout. Aiden Reilly was the winning pitcher. He allowed three hits and one walk to go with one strikeout in 3-1/3 innings.

Gosse gave up one hit and three walks while striking out three in two frames. Zach Zeefeld walked none and had two strikeouts in two-thirds of an inning.

“Copper Gosse, Aiden Reilly and Zach Zeeveld attacked the zone for us with Aiden earning the victory,” said PHS head coach Butch Cain.

Despite the win, Cain wasn’t pleased with several areas in his team’s play.

“We didn’t play like we are capable of. We lost our focus on the diamond and in the dugout,” said Cain.

“We didn’t run the bases very well, missed signs and our defense missed opportunities to get the routine outs that we expect. We settled for some pitches instead of hitting our pitches early in the contest.”

Max Ward was the losing hurler. Elkhart didn’t have any batters with multiple hits.

Both teams made three errors.

Last Wednesday evening, the Panthers clobbered Ozaukee, 24- 0, in BEC action at Fredonia.

“This was our most complete game of the season in all phases thus far on the season,” said Cain.

“We rallied around one another on the diamond and in the dugout. Our base running was alert and aggressive.

“Our plan at the plate was executed very well. Our defense [which committed one error] was sharp,” the coach pointed out.

PHS pounded out 12 hits, led by Joe Steinhardt who was 4-for- 4. Matt Pohl had two hits.

Steinhardt and Ben Picard paced PHS in RBIs with three apiece, followed by Pohl and Isaac Fintak with two each. Will Birkholz and Pohl scored a teamhigh four runs apiece.

Holden Reilly, Michael Troka and Zeeveld combined for a one hit shutout, with Reilly earning the win. Reilly threw two innings and allowed one walk to go with three strikeouts.

“Holden Reilly, Michael Troka and Zach Zeeveld controlled the strike zone and made the Warriors swing the bats,” Cain noted.

Mitchell Weyker was the losing pitcher.

Ozaukee committed four errors.
