Tigers breeze to BEC sweep over EL-G

Tiger third baseman Hayden Smith attempts to tag Vollbrecht. – Photo by Mike McGill ELKHART LAKE – The Howards Grove Tigers cruised to a doubleheader sweep over Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah in Big East Conference small-school division baseball action here Monday.

HG won the opener, 13-2, and the nightcap, 35-2. The Tigers upped their BEC record to 8-3 (8-3 overall). HG was in second place in the small-school division behind Random Lake (8-2 in BEC) through Monday.

Gavin Winter had five RBIs and Eric Reinemann cracked three hits to key the Tigers’ attack in the opener. Reinemann also knocked in three runs. Winter also collected two hits.

The Tigers only outhit the Resorters 8-7 but drew nine walks, compared to none for Elkhart.

Koenig allowed two earned runs and fanned nine batters. The game ended after six innings due to the 10-run rule.

Deegan Kossman led the Resorters in hits with two. Max Ward and Cody Nelson had one RBI each.

GAME TWO

In the nightcap, the Tigers banged out a whopping 25 hits and had an amazing 18-run fifth inning. Koenig, Winter and Ryan Splittgerber paced HG in hits with four each, followed by Reinemann and Mason Valenstein with three each.

Winter led the Tigers in RBIs with seven. Reinemann had six and Splittgerber, five.

Splittgerber twirled a three-hitter and earned the win. He allowed one earned run and one walk to go with three strikeouts. The contest was run-ruled after five.

Four Elkhart hurlers combined to allow 12 walks while hitting three batters and striking out two.

Zach Bauer led EL-G in hits with two and had one RBI.

The two losses dropped the Resorters’ BEC record to 0-9 (0-9 overall).
